Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is a highly corrosive chemical that can cause severe injuries if handled incorrectly. This guide is essential reading for all users and must be followed strictly to ensure workplace safety.

Golden Rule: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is Mandatory!

Eye Protection: Must wear chemical splash-proof goggles, preferably with an additional face shield.

Hand Protection: Must wear alkali-resistant chemical protective gloves (such as nitrile or neoprene rubber gloves).

Body Protection: Wear acid-alkali resistant protective clothing or apron.

Respiratory Protection: Use appropriate respiratory protection in poorly ventilated areas or when handling large quantities.

Dissolution Operation: Remember "Base into Water" - Never "Water into Base"!

Scientific Explanation: Caustic soda dissolves in water releasing significant heat, which can cause the liquid to boil and splash instantly.

Correct Procedure:

  • Work in a well-ventilated area
  • Slowly and gradually add caustic soda to cold water while stirring continuously
  • Monitor container temperature - if it becomes too hot, pause addition and wait for cooling before continuing

Absolutely Forbidden: Never pour water into caustic soda! This can cause violent boiling and dangerous splashing.

Storage Requirements: Sealed, Dry, Isolated

Sealed Storage: Must use completely sealed containers because caustic soda easily absorbs moisture from air (deliquescence) and carbon dioxide (deterioration).

Dry Environment: Store in a dry, well-ventilated environment with controlled humidity.

Isolation: Must be stored separately from acids (which cause violent neutralization reactions) and reactive metals like aluminum (which react to produce hydrogen gas, creating explosion risk).

Emergency Response: What to Do First?

Skin Contact: Immediately flush with copious amounts of running water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and seek medical attention.

Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with eyewash station or copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Keep eyelids open and seek immediate medical attention.

Small Spill: While wearing proper PPE, use tools to scoop up material and place in sealed containers. Neutralize residual material with appropriate acid.

Large Spill: Evacuate area immediately, contain spill if possible, and call emergency services.

Prevention is Better Than Cure

Always respect the hazardous nature of caustic soda. Proper handling, storage, and emergency preparedness are not just regulatory requirements – they are essential for protecting lives and maintaining a safe working environment.
